Winning a scholarship to California’s most prestigious art school seems like a fairy tale ending to Sabine Reye’s awful senior year. After losing both her mother and her home, Sabine longs for a place where she belongs.

But the cutthroat world of visual arts is nothing like what Sabine had imagined. Colin Krell, the renowned faculty member whom she had hoped would mentor her, seems to take merciless delight in tearing down her best work—and warns her that she’ll lose the merit-based award if she doesn’t improve.

Desperate and humiliated, Sabine doesn’t know where to turn. Then she meets Adam, a grad student who understands better than anyone the pressures of art school. He even helps Sabine get insight on Krell by showing her the modern master’s work in progress, a portrait that’s sold for a million dollars sight unseen.

Sabine is enthralled by the portrait; within those swirling, colorful layers of paint is the key to winning her inscrutable teacher’s approval. Krell did advise her to improve her craft by copying a painting she connects with . . . but what would he think of Sabine secretly painting her own version of his masterpiece? And what should she do when she accidentally becomes party to a crime so well -plotted that no one knows about it but her?

This was a really interesting book.

First of all, I LOVE THE COVER. IT’S LITERALLY GORGEOUS.

Anyways, Sabine was a sort of meh character in my opinion- I felt bad for her and all, but she was… kind of boring? I did like her art descriptions, though!

She had a traumatizing past but the whole ordeal was so confusing that I still don’t understand everything. Who was Haley again? Was her mom alive at the beginning or was she already dead? What about her dad?

Either they weren’t properly explained, or I have a bad memory 😉

One thing I did really enjoy about What I Want You To See was the art! I loved reading about different styles of art and how the classes were. It seemed fairly realistic and really intriguing- the level of stress it puts on someone, especially someone with a scholarship, and the cutthroat competition.

Kevin, the love interest, started off as a strong character. I liked him and I wished Sabine would like him, not ****, but alas, she was a dunderhead (I like saying ‘dunderhead’ lol).

Eventually, though, while she realized her feelings for him, he became more and more uninteresting. Which is a pity because he had the potential to change the book for the better.

Finally, the whole ‘heist’ and crime was the best part! (actually second best to the art, but potato potahto). I found it super cool to follow (yes, I know, that sounds shady BUT) and the outcome actually completely took me by surprise!

Overall, this book was a 3.5-star read, rounded to four. Thank you soo much to Rockstar Book Tours and the author and publishers for this opportunity!

  1. Oooohhhh this looks like a cool book! I LOVE the cover, it’s so pretty!
    Me reading any book:
“Either they weren’t properly explained, or I have a bad memory 😉”
I think it’s the latter of those two xD
We should start a petition to get people to say dunderheads, it sounds cool 😎
    Loved this post xx 💕

Ohmigosh, yes! Instead of ‘stupid’ or ‘idiot’, ,,dunderhead” is perFECT.

  2. Love the sound of this! ✨ It’s very different to what I’d usually go for as I’m obsessed with fantasy/dystopian books at the moment but the cover alone would draw me in to it. Great post! 💕

    1. Thank you! (also I’m so sorry for not reading your posts lately- I’ve just been in a really weird groove ugh but thanku for ur support!!)
Yeah, I get that. My favorite genres are fantasy and contemporary, so this is up my ally! But the mystery aspect adds ,,oomph” to it hehe. Thank you for commenting!

  3. I love the cover too— the colours are awesome!! The plot sounds interesting, I think the art aspect would be interesting as well. The way it can be described and then you get to picture it you head. And a heist is not where I pictured this book going but interesting again and it is good that the ending was able to surprise you though.
It is shame you didn’t really like the characters or connect with them.
Still I loved hearing all your thoughts on this book!! Great review!! ❤

    1. Yes, I agree! It’s super unique and pretty! The plot was really eye-catching, which is why I signed up for the tour initially. The art part was really cool! It was what made the book worth a read. Ahah yeah- same. But the heist was a super cool twist and I literally never saw some things coming.
      Yeah, sadly 😦

  4. THE COVER IS A LITERAL PIECE OF ART 😍 also, is it just me or do you think a generally bad book is better than a book with great potential… that ends up disappointingly mediocre? those are the worst, cuz it could be so amazing! otherwise, reading abt an art school experience sounds like the coolest?? they have a reputation for being all fancy-shmancy but pish posh cuz it sounds wonderful! combined with the heist experience, it sounds super interesting! :))

(also, dunderhead will now become a thing. i was talking to my brother today and he kept using the word “madcapper”- which i’m *totally* stealing XD)

    1. I KNOW RIGHT. Literally I didn’t realize that it was supposed to be one of the major art pieces in the story until the end! BUT IT’S SO PRETTYY. 😍 I totally see what you mean. It’s like… I don’t want to waste my time reading this! At least with a bad book I can rant lmao.
The art school was the best part, tbh. I loved the pish-posh (the word: love it) and cutthroat environment of the school. AND THE HEIST, I-
(agreeeeeed. MADCAPPER I STAN IT. (where does it come from??) lmao)

  5. WELCOME BACK!!!! ❤ ❤ ❤ I'm so glad to see your posts in my feed again 😉
Oooh, that cover is simply gorgeous *heart eyes* and I loved reading your review! I'm sad about the lost potential in this, it sounded like it could have been a really good book. 😦 Still, the art descriptions sound really cool. Awesome post! ❤

  6. That cover is stunning like you said 😍 obviously the painting but I also like the way that the white wall with random paint splashes frames it. And the premise sounds pretty interesting 😊
