The 40 Most Popular YA Books: have I read them? | part 2

The only thing I could think about when I wrote this: Bob the Builder- Have I read this? Bob the Builder- YES I have!

In other news, hello!

How is everyone doing? I’m NOT doing great, and my mental state is currently ~chaos~. After RBG passed away, I’ve just been worrying nonstop and hearing anything (I mean anything) about the presidential election makes my heart race and makes me hyper-worried. Seriously not fun.

Thankfully, I’ve been keeping myself super busy with school, a music performance coming up (if you’re an OG you remember the times when I was always giving concerts- sadly COVID and school paused that but I’ve started to take more virtual opportunities!), and activism- especially focusing on local elections I can help with.

I promise to put out at least one more post this month!! I’m not gone, I promise!

Two posts ago I posted part one of this series where I see if I’ve read the forty most popular recent YA books (here’s Goodreads’ official list!). I got the idea from Elli @ AceReader!

Renegades (Renegades, #1)   Sadie   The Hazel Wood (The Hazel Wood, #1)

Renegades by Marissa Meyer

Nope, ❎ the only book I’ve read by Marissa Meyer is Cinder and I never ended up finishing the series. I think this is a superhero book? So it might be interesting to read!

Sadie by Courtney Summers

Nope again ❎ this is like the peak of middle school YA for me- I used to read ONLY books like this. It was a rough time and I thought I was Not Like Other Girls.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

Nope ❎- I looked through this list and I have read a lot less than I thought tbh. I haven’t heard of this as much as some of the other books on here but at first glance the cover looks really nice!

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (The Hunger Games, #0)  Leah on the Offbeat (Creekwood, #2)  The Poet X

The Ballad of Songbirds And Snakes by Suzanne Collins

Yes! ✅ I read this around two weeks after it was published (I borrowed it from my cousin) and rated it 3/5 stars. It was disappointing but I went in expecting to be disappointed, so I still enjoyed it.

Leah On The Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

Yup ✅ I liked this more than Simon if that’s possible lol. Looking back on it there were issues- Leah pressuring Abby to come out was the most evident and definitely NOT okay. But I still loved it at the time so I’m not changing my rating!

The Poet X By Elizabeth Acevedo

No, but I really want to! ❎ I seriously LOVED With The Fire On High and I’m very eager to read this one.

Long Way Down  Eliza and Her Monsters  Wayward Son (Simon Snow, #2)

Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

Nope ❎, and the cover doesn’t seem familiar although the author definitely is.

Eliza And Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

No! ❎ I remember seeing this book in my school library even before blogging and I think Vaishnavi recommended it to me (or maybe the librarian did. idk.). I haven’t read it though lol.

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

I have absolutely no intention of reading anything lse from Rainbow racist Rowell ❎ I admit that I liked Fangirl but RR is just so problematic,,, and E&P is positively disgusting (I’ve seen excerpts of the racist parts).

To Kill a Kingdom  A Curse So Dark and Lonely (Cursebreakers, #1)  We Are Okay

To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

Never heard of it! ❎ But the cover is very cool! It seems to be a siren novel- and the cover looks like House of Salt and Sorrows which has a similar plot. Interesting.

A Curse So Dark And Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

Yup! ✅ I liked this book but I never got a chance to pick up the sequel, which is about Gray I think (was his name Mr. Gray or just Gray? idek).

We Are Okay by Nina LaCour

Nope ❎ but I’ve been interested in reading this for a while- it’s sapphic and sad though, so I need to be in the mood for a sad book if I’m going to read it.

Truly Devious (Truly Devious, #1)  Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove, #1)  When Dimple Met Rishi (Dimple and Rishi, #1)

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

I haven’t! ❎ I’ve heard of it but don’t really know what it’s about tbh. I think it’s a mystery and I haven’t read any mysteries lately so I might actually pick it up! It sounds pretty cool.

Serpent And Dove by Shelby Mahurin

No, although this was so popular around the blogosphere when it came out (I think in early 2020 or late 2019). ❎

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

Ugh, no, I haven’t! ❎ I actually own it though, and my mom read it, (and didn’t like it. but we have wildly different tastes so idk.) so I’ve been meaning to pick it up. It’s probably the most popular YA book by an Indian author yet I haven’t read it!

Two Can Keep a Secret  King of Scars (King of Scars Duology, #1)  Sorcery of Thorns

Two Can Keep A Secret by Karen M. McManus

I haven’t! ❎ I read One of Us is Lying and really liked it, but I haven’t read this one. I don’t think this is the sequel though- but I should probably read the sequel, it sounds exciting!

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

Nope ❎ While I loved the SoC duology, I haven’t read Shadow And Bone or this book and while I KNOW I should read it I just- asdfgjkl there’s too many books to read.

Sorcery Of Thorns by Margaret Robinson

I remember when I wanted to read this just because everyone else was talking about it 🙈 even though I didn’t know what it was about. I still haven’t read it ❎ and I still don’t know what it is about.

History Is All You Left Me  Flame in the Mist (Flame in the Mist, #1)

History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

Nope. ❎ Obviously I know who Adam Silvera is but I’ve never heard of this book- it sounds sad AF.

Flame In The Mist by Renee Ahdieh

Last one!! And… no? ❎ And I feel like it’s familiar but I’m not sure… (OHH this is the author of The Wrath and The Dawn! That makes so much sense haha.)

And that’s a wrap!

We’re past 1000 words (is that a surprise to anybody?) and this post is going up four days after my initial estimate 🙈 Oh well, life surprises us all.

And I’ve read a grand total of 3 of these books which brings us to 12 out of 40, including my first post!

Less than I thought initially but it makes sense!

I created a super cute Notion layout and I was inspired by #notiontwt so would you all like to see it? This is like my version of a lazy bullet journal lol. I prefer digital to having to write down everything 😴

Have a wonderful day!

  1. I’d love to see the layout, I’m sure you’ve made it beautiful!
Also, this is so cool! I have worked a little on making a graphic instead of a tag for people to just pop into Canva or something to mark them and am gonna show you soon!
    Awesome post, Adi!

  2. Wow, I haven’t read any of these books. I used to consider myself to be a big fan of YA fiction but now that I actually stop and think about it, my taste in books has changed drastically over the past 3 years! But, I still love reading about other people reading them, and this was a really fun post!

  4. So excited to see you doing part 2 of this post! I personally loved Renegades (great if you love superheroes and cool powers), Sadie (interesting mystery and switches between a normal POV and a cool podcast!), and Sorcery of Thorns (full of magic and book appreciation)! 🥰

  6. I started using Notion back in January AND IT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! Like, seriously, it has made organizing my blog SO much easier. I love love love it, though I am totally in awe of the people who create cute aesthetically pleasing dashboards. Like, SHOW ME YOUR WAYS PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

But annnnywayyys, what a super fun idea for a post! I really enjoyed reading it a lot and I’ve actually read more of these books than I would have thought. I have read Renegades, To Kill a Kingdom, A Curse So Dark and Lonely, Sorcery of Thorns, Truly Devious, and Serpent & Dove. Out of those my favorites were A Curse So Dark and Lonely and Sorcery of Thorns. Renegades was a fun Marvel-esque sort of superhero book and Truly Devious was a really atmospheric murder mystery that’s perfect for the Autumn season.

Anyways, I really loved reading this!!!

    1. HI KAT!! I’d just like to say I’m in awe of your blog it’s BEAUTIFUL and intimidating (oops) so I’m kind of shocked that you’re here commenting on my post lol. 😅
I DEFINITELY AGREE- Notion is super fun and helpful and I totally did not spend five hours organizing my Notion dashboard ahha. AND YES- honestly my dashboard isn’t the best but it’s gotta do for now because I spent way too much time on it!!
Thank youuu! That’s awesome!! Renegades is starting to sound really good to me so I just might try it out :)) also this is random but I haven’t read a book in nearly three weeks and I really really want to read again!! So do you have any slump recs?
      Thank you again!

  7. This was a fun post!! I’m quite ashamed of myself as I’ve only read Renegades here ahhh and I thought myself to be quite a YA reader! Well now I have to up my game and have more to devour! 😄

  8. Oh, this is such a fun post. I actually really loved SADIE (and I don’t think it has the “not like other girls” vibe haha), even though I didn’t enjoy an earlier title I read by the author. LONG WAY DOWN was fantastic, would highly recommend it if you enjoy poetry at all. I’m not a fan of poetry, but the audiobook worked really well for me. TO KILL A KINGDOM is not exactly groundbreaking, but it does have a pretty nice enemies to lovers dynamic with solid banter. I was so excited for SORCERY OF THORNS, but it really didn’t live up to my expectations. 😦 Great post!

    1. Thank you Veronika! Yess, for sure- I’ve heard lots of people love “Sadie” and I might read it sometime- also I didn’t mean that it’s a “not like other girls” type of book I meant that it reminds me of my phase because that was when I read a bunch of books like this lol.
That’s great to know! I’ve never read anything by Jason Reynolds so I’m excited to see how I’d like it. And sorry that “Sorcery of Thorns” didn’t live up to your expectations!! I remember a lot of people really liked it so it sucks that it didn’t work out 😦
Thank you for the comment Veronika!

  9. I read 3 too, just a different 3 😂 although I’d say another 7 or so are high priority reads for me so fingers crossed it’s more soon.
I loved The Hazel Wood 😍 and even though I’ve failed to read the sequel yet I’m definitely itching to soon, especially as Tales of The Hinterland is now out and that companion sounds amazing 😍😍

I hope you enjoy want of these that you do end up reading . I also hope that you’re a lot less stressed than you were when you write this post.
