7 Of My Favorite Types of Characters

I’m back with another bookish post after a month of purely short-story-writing and a quick review/rant about Never Have I Ever.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a list (I think this was the last time, and it was in 2019!) so it’s about time to write another one. I’ll be sharing my favorite types of characters. If you still don’t understand, just wait and read it!

I hope everyone’s staying safe and social distancing- I’ve been doing a lot of cooking lately and if you want I could share some recipes that I’ve been using!

Now let’s get onto the post- it’s quite wordy 😉

1. Lonely ‘Hides-In-Humor’ Boy

Leo Valdez (Riordanverse), Keefe Sencen (Keeper of the Lost Cities), Jake Peralta (B99), Sokka (Avatar), Jesper Fahey (Six of Crows)

I swear I am TRASH for this trope. Most of my favorite characters fall into this (and yes, most of the characters in this trope are boys- comment below any girl characters that you think fit this!) and I unashamedly love them.

We’re talking, adorable goofballs who are hilarious but hide their pain in jokes and humor. I’d say the best examples of these are Leo and Keefe but Jake, Sokka, and Jesper Fahey also fall into this category!

2. Nerdy/Smart and Amazing Girls

Annabeth Chase (Riordanverse), Hermione Granger (do I really need to say what fandom she’s from?), Amy Santiago (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

Once again, yes, this is also a gender-specific role, fight me on this!

These girls are every middle school girl’s role model (MINE SPECIFICALLY) (okay, let’s be real: every high schooler, college-goer, and just everyone in general!). We’ve got Annabeth Chase, who is a totally amazing kickass and damn smart girl, Hermione Granger who’s basically the sole reason Harry and Ron survived past the second year, and Amy Santiago, who starts off like the other two- just nerdy- but ends up being a full, developed, beloved character.

Plus, I totally looked up to Annabeth and Hermione and still do!

3. The ~ANGSTY~ Ones

Zuko (ATLA), Nico di Angelo (Riordanverse), Harry Potter (… once again, we all know him), Kaz Brekker (SoC)

Yes, you named it. (also pretty much all of these are gender-specific which shows that we embrace stereotypes more than we realize. idek)

Zuko in his ‘Prince Zuko’ phase (“I’m PERFECTLY CALM!!!” *smashes table*) or even when he was good (”why am I so bad at being good?!?!”) was the PINNACLE of angst, but these others were up there for sure. We’ve got Nico, our sweet gay ‘death boy’, Harry Potter specifically in 5th year (nO neED to caLL mE ‘siR’, prOfEssOR), and Kaz who’s kind of different but I believe he still fits in this category. Kaz was more ruthless than these others but his constant pining over Inej gave EVERYONE a headache (angst, anyone?).

5. Sweet Boi 🥺

Aang (Avatar), Jason Grace (Riordanverse), Noah Czerny (The Raven Boys), Bolin (Legend of Korra)

Oh my gosh, YES. First of all, they are so cute and sweet?!

To be fair, Aang is the best example of this trope: he’s sweet, adorable, and innocent (literally the example of this emoji- 🥺). Also, Jason’s character in the Heroes of Olympus books is more noble than sweet, but I have a headcanon (and the entire fandom basically agrees) that Jason is that one straight white boy who goes to pride parades to support his friends and is unapologetically a huge ally to everyone! He’s just a sweetie ❤

Noah is less of this trope because he’s quieter in my opinion but I still think he’s really cute and sweet. Bolin (!!) is also nice and cheerful and more on the louder side of this trope.

(also, honorable mention to Wylan from Six of Crows! I forgot to add him here XD)

6. The ‘Breaks All Toxic Masculinity Tropes’ Guy

AHHH, MY BOYS ❤

Percy Jackson is the OG and of course he has to be on this list somewhere! I think he’s a great example of breaking literally every toxic masculinity stereotype- he shows emotion, he loves his friends, treats Annabeth like the queen she is, and drinks ‘respect women’ juice (it’s a meme, don’t call me out).

Terry Jeffords in B99 is also an amazing example of that. He’s played by Terry Crews, a former football player who spoke out with the #MeToo movement and his character is GOLDEN. He looks buff and intimidating, but he’s the most gentle- he adores his wife, loves his kids, respects his coworkers, and isn’t afraid to help out the people he cares about.

Also, Adam from Every Other Weekend fits this mold- I remember specifically thinking that he is the opposite of toxic masculinity while reading it- but I think a lot of you won’t know his character (hugely underrated book!). Plus, I couldn’t find any pictures or fanart because it was released in February lol.

4.  Badass Girls

Rosa Diaz (B99), Toph Beifong (ATLA), Reyna Ramirez-Arrelano (Riordanverse), Inej Ghafa (SoC), Aelin (ToG)

Guys, gals, and pals: I LOVE THESE GIRLS SO MUCH. The nerdy/smart ones ^^ are also badass in their own way, but we’re specifically talking that type of badass. The motorcycle girls who guard their heart and leave you awestruck. THOSE ONES.

Rosa, Toph, and Reyna are probably the best examples of this and the most accurate, but Aelin is equally badass, but less of a motorcycle-girl-way and more of a slit-your-throat-while-flirting way. Inej probably fits into this category the least, but while she doesn’t necessarily want to hurt you- she will.

7. Macho Tough Dude™ with a Heart of Gold

Lorcan (Throne of Glass), Ronan Lynch (The Raven Boys), Matthias Helvar (Six of Crows)

I love this trope- and all of these characters are great fits.

Personally, I think most of the men in Throne of Glass fit this? Like Rowan definitely does, and I think Chaol could, too! I’m not a *huge* fan of Ronan from TRB (at least not yet- I’m not even done with the second book) but I remember loving Lorcan and Elide’s relationship and MATTHIAS, he’s great.

And, that’s a wrap! This was surprisingly a lot of fun to write and I’m proud that I made, like, seven graphics 😂
