“Switcheroo Pt. 2”: fake identity, the actual party // StayHomeWriMo Day 23

Hey loves!

I didn’t post yesterday because it was Earth Day and I was super busy ( like, SUPER busy- I’m a climate activist IRL so I went live on earthdaylive2020.org and there were like a thousand people watching and my name was next to Al Gore’s and !!)

But here’s Switcheroo Pt. 2, go read the first part first!

“Hey, Elle!”

I step onto the sidewalk and walk in my tall boots over the grass.

“Uh- uh, hey!” I stammer, forcing a smile onto my face as I give a small wave that feels monotonous. The girl who had called out to me has shoulder-length blonde curls and is wearing a pink mesh top.

Blonde hair… blue eyes… Rebecka, I think, going through my mental database.

“Hey Rebecka!” I say with a bright smile, sauntering over to her. I use one of Elle’s signature moves: tossing my hair over my shoulder and cocking my head.

Rebecka grinned at me. So far, she hadn’t noticed anything.

“Come on, Ju and Amber and waiting for us. Apparently Sofia has mocktails for us!” Rebecka continued talking, linking her arm through mine.

As we walked into the manor, I was struck by how grand it was. Green grass lined the pathways and there was a fountain in the distance.

“Wow,” I breathed, not realizing that I said it out loud.

Rebecka gave me a strange look, but then we stepped inside the gates to the backyard and she totally forgot whatever she was going to tell me.

There were only about a dozen people there but I could already tell that it was a huge party.

“Elle! Rebecka!” Julia chirped, walking toward us and flashing me a brilliant smile. “You look so cute, girl!”

I giggled and put a hand on hers. “No you, Ju!”

Julia frowned as she glanced at my hand. “What’s up with your nails? I thought you did them last Sunday?”

My heart beat faster and I tried my best to keep cool. Elle hadn’t had time to do my nails before the party.

I sighed dramatically. “You know, accident things. I chipped a few of them when I almost fell down the stairs and decided to just take ’em off. I didn’t have time to redo them. Shame, I know.”

Julia was quiet for a moment but then she shrugged. “Sure, whatever. Anyways, Beck, Amber and I got some snacks for you and Elle. Elle, Sofia wanted to see you or whatever.”

I suddenly felt sweaty. This was the whole reason I was here, right? To impress Sofia and get Elle into the ‘cool squad’?

“Hey, Sofia!” I said cheerfully, sidling up to the brunette beauty. “You wanted to see me?”

Sofia was chatting with Lucia but she turned around and shot me a sweet smile. “Hey girl! Yeah, just wanted to see how you’re doing.”

I was struck by how nice Sofia actually was. I laughed politely. “Oh my god, you’re too nice. I’m having a blast! Thanks for inviting me!”

Internally, I cursed myself. That wasn’t cool enough to get Elle in with the gang.

“So,” I continued. “You’re an amazing gymnast, huh? I love gymnastics too!”

When I saw Sofia’s eyes light up I knew I was in trouble.

“Oh my god, really?! You totally need to show me!”

I gulped. Elle did do gymnastics, but I knew she wouldn’t appreciate me showing Sofia my completely BSed ‘gymnastics’.

“Oh, no, my clothes, I-”

Sofia waved me away. “Every good gymnast can perform no matter their clothes!”

That’s when I knew I was screwed.

“Oh, Sofia, no- I- I’m still sore from falling down the stairs today morning and breaking my nails,” I lied. “I don’t think I can do anything right now.”

Sofia smiled sympathetically. “I get you, girl. After last week’s gymnastics competition I was sore for three days!”

I smiled at her, relieved. That had been a close call.

Sofia started to walk away then turned around, her gorgeous beach waves sweeping over her shoulders.

“Oh, and? I’ll text you the time of my pool party next week. I think you’ll like it.” Sofia said before walking away.

Outside, only a small smile flit over my face.

But inside?

Oh, boy, I was throwing a huge party in my mind.
