Author Interview: Hannah Jayne

Hey everyone!

Yes, I’m so excited to be having an ACTUAL AUTHOR and an ACTUAL INTERVIEW. I’m in a week-long writing camp (by the time this is published it will have been over) where our teacher is the one and only Hannah Jayne?

Have any of you heard of her? She’s really funny, a great teacher, and basically the sole reason why my novel is even moving forward. Oh, and she’s a pretty popular YA and adult thriller author!

Also, her newest published book, Copycat, has an AMAZING cover and the synopsis looks so interesting!! I’m thrilled (see what I did there?) to have her featured on my blog!

Let’s get to it! >>>

Can you tell us about your newest book?

HANNAH: Copycat is about a superfan of mysteries until the author reaches out to her. Addie is at first thrilled until the fictional murders happen in her town!

WOAH that sounds like a dream come true… quickly becoming your worst nightmare. I’m hooked!

Regarding Copycat, you’ve mentioned that you normally write strong female protagonists. Is your main character also like that? Is she based off of anyone on your life?

HANNAH: Addie is a little less strong. She’s a bit of a bookworm who doesn’t get out much but she develops her strength. She’s loosely based off me as a kid.

Haha, bookworm! Sounds familiar! That’s totally me 🙂

Can you tell us about your writing process?

Lately my writing process involves peeling cats off my lap while Peppa Pig plays in the background.

Wonderful. My cousin went through a Peppa Pig phase and I’m surprisingly knowledgeable because of that.

When you get writer’s block, how do you overcome it?

I force myself. I beat inspiration into submission! If I don’t write, I don’t get paid so that helps. Otherwise, I change my scenery, go for a walk, give myself permission to write something terrible.

Yup, no food on the table is quite a good motivation!

Was there a book in particular that inspired you to start writing?

No, I’ve always wanted to write but From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler may have helped.

Ooh, fun! That’s been on my TBR for a while 🙂

Other than thrillers, what’s your favorite genre to read and/or write?

I like to read just about everything! I love thrillers and mysteries (obviously) but I’ll read anything from Chitra Divakaruni, Ruth Ware, or Lee Smith.

I’ve heard of Chitra. I think I’ll really like her writing! I love authors that look like me as well!

Any last advice for prospective authors?

Don’t give up! You only fail when you stop trying. It sounds cliché, but it’s true.

Thanks for agreeing to this interview, Hannah! Your answers were very useful to me and hopefully all the readers will enjoy them too!

It was awesome to be in the workshop with her and I learned a lot! I’m excited to read Copycat and see how I like it!

I definitely think you have to persevere through writers block so you are always writing and it is the best solution but of course taking breaks when necessary!!
